Emergency Closure of Schools

Please see the attached information regarding emergency school closure.  News and radio stations that will report Rocky View School closures have been included in this information.

School Closure Procedures Due to Weather:

  1. Board Policy 20 regarding the Emergency Closure of Schools and Cancellation of Bus Service is in effect. Please refer to the RVS website.
  2. When snow conditions make roads impassable, and/or when the wind chill factor reaches or exceeds –40 degrees C, school closure procedures may be initiated.
  3. Closure procedures due to weather will be initiated only before conveying students to school in the morning, by 5:30 a.m. on the day of the potential closure. Once students are being conveyed to school, the school will not be closed because of weather conditions until regular dismissal time.

Notification

The following radio and television stations will be notified:
Global News Morning Edition, CBC Radio, CHFM, Lite 96, 66CFR, JACK FM, QR77, Q 107, Country 105 FM, CKMX 1060, CJAY92, Air 106 (Airdrie) and CITY TV.

School Closures will also be posted on the website, Facebook and twitter and recorded on the Transportation Information Line https://www.rockyview.ab.ca/transportation/inclementweather   403.945.4138 (late line).

Closure information will be sent via e-mail to all Rocky View staff.

Single Bus Route Cancellation, Revision or Delay

  1. Cancellation
    On those occasions when a bus driver feels it is unsafe to operate his/her rural school bus route, the school administrators at their school, parents of all the students who ride the bus and the Director of Transportation must be notified by telephone. The message to parents must state clearly that service is cancelled for both morning and afternoon.
  2. Delay
    If a rural bus is delayed by mechanical failure or road conditions during the morning or
    afternoon trip, the school(s) and the Transportation Department must be advised.
    If a bus driver feels it is unsafe to start his/her school bus route at the scheduled time but feels that roads or other conditions will improve in about 1 hour the bus driver may choose to delay starting his/her bus route by either1 or 2 hours. The school, parents of all the students who ride the bus and the Director of Transportation must be notified by telephone of this delay. The message to parents must state clearly that service is being delayed for safety reasons, the bus will be running 1 or 2 hours late for the morning service. Afternoon service will not be affected.
  3. Revision
    A bus driver may make temporary revisions to a rural bus route any time weather or road conditions make part of the route unsafe to operate. Parents of the student affected must be advised.
